Since ancient times, Licorice root has been used both as a food and as medicine. In Chinese herbology it is an ingredient in almost all herbal formulas for the purpose of “harmonizing” the separate herbs involved. A member of the pea family, Licorice has a variety of active ingredients, one of which is glycyrrhizin. Glycyrrhizin has been found to possess anti-inflammatory, cough-suppressant, antiviral, estrogen-like and aldosterone-like activities. Licorice Root Uses & Scientific Evidence For
Licorice is taken orally (DGL form) for ulcers, heartburn (esophageal reflux), and mouth sores. Other oral uses involving the whole herb is the treatment of coughs, asthma, and chronic fatigue syndrome. In its topical form (whole herb), Licorice can be used for eczema, psoriasis, and herpes. Scientific studies suggest regular use of DGL can heal ulcers as well as some over the counter medications; however, they must be taken regularly or the ulcer will return.

Licorice Root Dosage Information
Ulcer Pain - chew two to four 380-mg tablets of DGL before meals and at bedtime in conjunction with conventional medical care.
Mouth Sores - Sucking on the tablets will relieve the pain. For best results, follow the directions listed on the label.
Respiratory Problems - Take orally 1 to 2 g of licorice root 3 times daily, not to exceed a week.
Eczema, psoriasis, or herpes - Apply licorice cream to affected area twice daily.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - This treatment must be taken under a physician’s supervision to be given the needed dosage for the best possible effects.
